* All elements of exposure work together. *

Comparison between shooting modes in the Basic Zone and Creative Zone.

  • This is for a Canon 350D (Rebel XT) however the same principals apply to other cameras.
  • Close up mode. - Camera will automatically set ISO 100 to 400.
  • .................. Will try to set a shutter speed to allow hand holding.
  • .................. The camera may use the flash.
  • .................. And as always no control of the final output (.jpg pictures only)
  • .................. The manual has some recommendations re optional equipment to make close ups s lot more effective.
  • Close up photography is almost a whole world into itself and really needs another tutorial!
  • With close ups, flowers etc (1) Holding the camera steady becomes critical.
  • .............................................(2) Depth of field becomes a lot shallower. Beside aperture, depth of field is also dependant upon how far away you are from a subject.... Maybe we cover it in Lens tutorial?.
  • ..............................................(3) Lighting the subject may be a problem when you are really close.
  • .
  • Close up is relative... How close do you want to be to this exploding dragster?
  • .
  • Which leads us into Sports mode.

  • Canon 350D (Rebel XT) with 70-200 F4 L (Non IS) lens.
  • ISO 400 - 1/1600 @F10, Focal length = 94 mm (~150 mm equivalent) . Hand held.
  • Here a high shutter speed was used, by the camera, to stop the action.
  • Camera was used in Sports mode.
  • Slightly larger pic is available by clicking on the link above.
  • Sports Mode.
  • The camera will set an ISO of 400 and use the fastest possible shutter speed to freeze the action as in the picture above.
  • It will also set the camera focus mode to enable moving objects to be tracked a lot more accurately (Tute on focus modes?)
  • It will also allow lots of photographs to be taken in quick succession by holding the button down.
  • .
  • As usual will not allow total control over final picture .jpg only. The flash is not used.
  • .
  • I the picture below I have used fill in flash because there is not a lot light up in the tree branches.
  • I have also used ISO 200 to reduce the noise and the original was shot in RAW format to allow more control of the final pic.
  • If I would have used sports mode I would have been stuck with ISO 400, not been able to use a flash as well as only having a .jpg image to work with.
  • A larger pic is available by clicking on the bird pic.

  • Canon 350D (Rebel XT) with 75-300 IS zoom and EX580 flash.
  • ISO 200, 1/200 @ F5.6 F=300mm Hand held
  • Fill in flash with no exposure compensation.
  • The shutter speed is automatically set to a minimum 1/200 to synchronize with the flash.
  • Larger pic is here
  • Night Portrait Shooting Mode. - For taking flash pictures of people outdoors. May use long exposure times that cannot be hand held successfully . Topic will be covered in night and flash tutorials to come..
  • .
  • Flash off mode turns the flash off both external and the built in flash.
  • In dim light this may result in very long exposures that cannot be hand held successfully. All exposure components are determined by the camera. This topic should be covered in a night photography tutorial.

Remember - Rule # 1 - Read the book! - the one that came with your camera.
